Politics: Timothy Garton Ash: The File

Tuesday 02 Mar, 6.15pm - 7.15pm

The File, Timothy Garton Ash

The File, Timothy Garton Ash

When Timothy Garton Ash graduated from Oxford in 1978, he went to live in Berlin, and gradually immersed himself in a study of the repressive political culture of East Germany. As if to return the favour, that culture – in the form of the dreaded East German secret police, the ‘Stasi’ – secretly drew up a File on his movements and behaviour. Timothy Garton Ash talks about the discovery of his File after the fall of The Berlin Wall and what he did about it. The result is a journey into the darkest recesses of the totalitarian mind. With Maureen Freely.
