Every lunchtime we will be staging a key debate, sponsered by Prospect Magazine, in which people set out their stall, argue with each other and then ask the audience what they think.
Our first debate is fairly and squarely about national identity. Over the last 150 years we have moved from the age of Empire to the age of embarrassment; the often-trumpeted British values of liberty, freedom and democracy have been replaced by a nannying state, controversial wars abroad and hopeless debt. Who do we think we are and what do we think we are doing?
Writer and broadcaster Safraz Manzoor talks to Prospect Magazine Editor David Goodhart, Daily Telegraph columnist Geoffrey Wheatcroft, journalist and author of The Strange Death of Tory England and Yo, Blair!, the writer Mary Loudon, (Middle England Revealed) and Kamila Shamsie about the issues involved.
