The Write Team Conference

The Write Team Conference:
‘before I was silent now I think loud’

A conference to explore the transformative impact of creative writing on young people and teachers.

Wednesday 29 June 2011 9.30am – 4.45pm

Hayesfield School,
Upper Oldfield Park, Bath BA2 3LA

‘Reading and writing skills are fundamental to young people’s futures, to enable them to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.’  Sue Horner, Magic Dust that Lasts – Writers in Schools Sustaining the Momentum, Arts Council England, 2010

If you would like to find out more about…

- Using creative writing to boost pupil confidence
- Using creative writing as a tool to develop pupil voice and their engagement in school
 - Developing your own teaching creative writing practice
 - How to transform literacy lessons through writing yourself
- Unlocking creativity and confidence in Initial Teacher Training

…then join the Write Team for a unique opportunity to explore the impact of creative writing upon pupil confidence and the development of teaching practice.

Bath Festivals Write Team is a three-year project that has provided weekly creative writing workshops, teacher INSET and Initial Teacher Training to address what we have called ‘truancy of the mind’ – targeted at those children who are quiet and uncommunicative  - ‘who keep a low profile’ (Keeping Up DfES 2007).  They do not show up on statistics for anti social behaviour, but they are far from achieving their potential.   This is an opportunity to learn more about the good practice developed by the project to ensure children and young people are given the opportunity to develop creatively and engage with their learning.

“The impact of the Write Team can … be said to be twofold: it changes how learners see themselves, and causes them to act and think differently both within the intervention setting and outside of it.” Write Team Lead Teacher

Key speakers include Professor Debra Myhill and Dr Anthony Wilson, University of Exeter and Sue Horner, former Director of Curriculum at QCA.  Through a series of presentations and workshops led by the Write Team teachers, writers, initial teacher trainees and other national and regional initiatives we will be discussing:

 - The most effective ways to develop and sustain creative writing across schools
- How to develop creativity across the curriculum
- How to maximise the impact of a writer’s visit to a school
 - The implications of the new curriculum on creativity in the classroom.

£50 including refreshments, a copy of the Write Team Anthology and Write Team Teaching Resources

£20 concession rate
